The islanders don’t see many “Dim-Dims”—foreigners—passing through what they call the Edge of the World. I remember naked children crying out in fear, running away, or ducking behind rocks at the sight of my approaching inflatable kayak. The adults, however, were simply curious, wondering what had brought me to this far-flung archipelago where “life is so hard”: no electricity, no cellphone coverage, no medical services, not even a single store. The uncomfortable truth is that I had come here for pleasure—for me, this hardship was just part of the adventure of exploring yet another hidden tropical paradise.
